One of the most important sanctuaries in Tuscany, Monte Senario is located 20 km from Florence, at an altitude of 817 metres.

From its terrace you can dominate the Mugello valleys as far as the Apennines, but also catch a glimpse of the city of Florence.

It is still possible to visit the caves where the hermits used to retreat before the convent was built. Our visit will begin with a gentle walk among the fir trees that step by step will lead us to the heart of the sanctuary.

Its history began in 1234, when seven Florentine nobles decided to renounce worldliness and dedicate their lives to Our Lady, friendship and community life. Initially, they built a small oratory and a house that can still be partly visited.

In 1404 a vigorous architectural intervention expanded the structure, which at the time was led by Antonio da Siena. In 1539, Cosimo I de Medici also financed new constructions and improvements, but it was the 17th and 18th century renovations that drastically altered the original forms of the sanctuary.

Among the most valuable works, still preserved, are paintings by Cigoli, Alessandro Allori and Francesco Curradi. For centuries, the distillery and pharmacy of Monte Senario have carried on the preparation of ancient recipes. Among the most successful products are the Gemma d'Abeto and Amore Borghini, two liqueurs known for their digestive properties.
