A day dedicated to good air, history and nature
Located at an altitude of about 1000 metres, it is one of the oldest abbeys in Tuscany, in fact the first monks settled in these mountains as early as 1038. The arboretum has more than 5,000 specimens of plants, all for scientific and experimental purposes, many of which are exotic.
We will start with a guided tour of the interior of the abbey, where the Benedictine monks still reside today. Since 1200 the abbey has seen many interventions and extensions, and artists such as Perugino, Andrea della Robbia, Raffaellino del Garbo, Volterrano and Ignazio Hugford.
In addition to the main rooms of the monastery complex, the tour also includes a visit to the Antica Farmacia e Liquoreria (Old Pharmacy and Liquor Store), where the most popular product is gin, made from wild juniper berries according to the monks' centuries-old recipe.
After an indigestion of history, we make ourselves comfortable for a pic nic in the garden, where you can bring your own packed lunch or buy something directly on site.
Immediately afterwards, we will venture intothe arboretum, accompanied by guides from the forestry department,
A veritable collection of plants that attracts scholars from all over the world.
A unique opportunity to get to know in depth the natural heritage of this forest on the border between Florence and Casentino.
