Boboli is the park of the Pitti Palace and one of the most important examples of Italian gardens.
It was built at the behest of the Medici family, who loved spending their days here.
In 1549, the Grand Duchess Eleanor of Toledo bought the palace and garden from the Pitti family, who owned the building and were forced to sell off all their properties due to bankruptcy.
The beautiful wife of Cosimo I de Medici, in fact, loved gardens and exotic plants and wanted a palace with a garden so she could enjoy the healthy air of the Oltrarno.
Enlarged several times over the centuries, today Boboli occupies an area of 45,000 square metres. After the end of the Medici dynasty, the park, together with the entire estate, passed to the Lorraine family. It was the Austrian family who built the Kaffeehaus, easily recognisable by the typical 'Lorraine green'.
The garden has the shape of an elongated triangle and is laid out on a series of terraces. It is enriched by avenues, paths, clearings, fountains and grottoes, Egyptian obelisks and statues from Roman and modern times.
Together we will go from Pitti to Porta Romana and tell you about the Medici and Savoy families, we’ll talk about Galileo, explore hidden corners, climb up to the Giardino del Cavaliere, home to rare varieties of roses and then down to Giambologna's Fountain of the Ocean. We will enjoy unexpected views of Florence and get lost in the labyrinths, among stories of the past and legends, telling of ancient games. We will have time to relax, reading, sitting on the grass, poems and texts by various artists, foreign travellers who were fascinated by the enchantment of the garden. We will learn about the plants found there, how the Medici introduced the cultivation of citrus fruits and their garden of exotic plants, the "ananassi".
