The Palatina Gallery is located on the "piano nobile" of the Pitti Palace.

The "piano nobile" was so called because it was the actual residence of the family and generally had the best interior decorations of the whole building.

This was the location of some of the reception rooms such as the salons, then the bedrooms and other rooms for the use of the ruling family, and this was once the winter apartments of the grand ducal family, first the Medici and later the Savoy. The superb collection of paintings was begun by the Medici and focuses on the late Renaissance and Baroque periods, the golden age of the palace itself, and is the most important and extensive example of a 'picture gallery' in Italy. The 'picture gallery', which still retains the same layout, was officially opened to the public in 1828 under the Savoy family.

One of the main features of the museum, in contrast to a modern layout, is that the paintings are not displayed in a systematic manner, but are purely decorative and cover most of the walls. Each room has its own character and is named after the frescoes on the vault. The layout is therefore very faithful to that commissioned by Grand Duke Pietro Leopoldo in the late 18th and early 19th centuries.

An intense guided tour will take us on a discovery of the world's greatest concentration of works by Raphael, such as the very sweet "Madonna della seggiola", Titian's Magdalene, and paintings by Tintoretto, Caravaggio and Rubens. Room after room we will discover together the secrets behind the hundreds of works of art that are kept in the Palatine Gallery, telling anecdotes and stories of the world's most famous artists.

In the last part of the museum tour we will admire the Royal Apartments, exactly as they were left by the Savoys, because, don’t forget, the Pitti Palace was the Royal Palace of Italy during the five years of Florence as capital.
